Alejandro Virelles began his training in 1995 in Santiago de Cuba. From 2001 to 2004 he studied at the National Ballet School of Cuba. He was a gold medalist in the International Competition of La Habana in 2001 and 2004 and won the silver medal at the International Competition of Varna in 2004.
Upon graduating, he was invited to join National Ballet of Cuba as a company dancer in 2004. He was promoted to soloist in 2006 followed by principal in 2009.
In 2011, Alejandro joined Barcelona Ballet (formerly Corella Ballet) under the direction of Angel Corella. During his time with Barcelona Ballet, Alejandro performed various principal roles and toured many renowned theatres throughout Spain and internationally.
In January 2013, Alejandro joined Boston Ballet under the direction of Mikko Nissinen, and in September of 2014 he joined English National Ballet as a principal dancer under the direction of Tamara Rojo where he currently dances.
Alejandro was selected as number 18 out of the 100 best dancers in the world for the 2010-2011 season, by Dance Europe Magazine.
He has also performed in various galas both in the USA and internationally including the Dance Open Festival in Saint Petersburg, 2011, and the YAGP galas in January and April of 2013.
